With this much wrong with the game there's not much point in critiquing anything else. If only the narrator had some advice on how to improve the controls. Mickey should throw apples? Really? It's like playing a "Doom" remake and they add a voice over that says you should fire your gun and open doors. When you are listening to the voice over you will think you are playing a game for preschoolers. Both the accuracy and the timing of the jumping are off.Īnother problem is the voice over. The controls are awful and the jumping is the worst! This is unforgivable. What do you do in this game more than anything else from the beginning of the game to the end? Jumping. There was more to dislike but the biggest problem with this game by far is the one thing that had to be right for the game not to be ruined and kind of pointless. Even with my having loved the original game and really wanting to like this game, I could not. Check out the demo first.Īre you guys all part of the development team for this game? How you could have actually played this game and given these positive reviews I don't know. Oh well, it's Microsoft's fault I clearly said 'no' to buying the game, and yet it made the download. In the end, I'm not too upset about losing $15 to this game, it could've been worse, but I still feel a little bit upset. There are collectable items you can aim to get throughout the levels, some of which unlock new costumes, and apparently after clearing a level you unlock the time attack for that level, so there is a bit of replay value, but once you've beaten the game there's not much to go back to. The jumping controls felt a bit tight compared to other platformers, which didn't cause too much trouble but was still a bit frustrating when it came to the platforming sections. But overall, most of the difficulties I encountered were taken care of not before long, and the game is a bit on the easy side a difficulty selection might have been nice. For instance, the second boss in the game, the Jack-in-the-Box, took about ten tries before I cleared it, because I had a fair bit of trouble figuring out how to avoid his punching glove attack I had to go to the edge of the venue and jump, but with very precise timing. Reading through some reviews first I was expecting the game to be too easy to be satisfying, but it has its challenging moments. I've only played the game for a few hours, and made it up to the fifth stage (the castle stage), but I think I have enough to write a review. I've never played the 1990 original so I can't really compare, however. After I stopped moping, I decided to try the game out after having read the reviews, with an idea of what I was in for. I tried to contact Microsoft and explain to them, and ask for a refund, but my efforts fell victim to futility. Let me start off this review by admitting that I didn't buy this game on purpose I actually downloaded this game accidentaly, even though I thought I cancelled out of the purchase (I pressed the B button, which usually means cancel), and it started downloading. The stories Noah tells are sometimes dark, occasionally bizarre, frequently tender, and always hilarious-whether he's subsisting on caterpillars during months of extreme poverty or making comically pitiful attempts at teenage romance in a color-obsessed world whether's he's being thrown into jail as the hapless fall guy for a crime he didn't commit or being thrown by his mother from a speeding car driven by murderous gangsters.". His brilliantly eccentric mother loomed over his life-a comically zealous Christian (they went to church six days a week and three times on Sunday), a savvy hustler who kept food on their table during rough times, and an aggressively involved, if often seriously misguided, parent who set Noah on his bumpy path to stardom. Noah was born illegal-the son of a white, Dutch father and a black Xhosa mother, who had to pretend to be his nanny or his father's servant in the brief moments when the family came together. In his first book, Noah tells his coming of age story with his larger-than-life mother during the last gasps of apartheid-era South Africa and the turbulent years that followed. He is a light-footed but cutting observer of the relentless absurdities of politics, nationalism and race-and in particular the craziness of his own young life, which he's lived at the intersections of culture and history. Trevor Noah is the host of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, where he gleefully provides America with its nightly dose of serrated satire. Noah provides something deeper than traditional memorists: powerfully funny observations about how farcical political and social systems play out in our lives. "One of the comedy world's fastest-rising stars tells his wild coming of age story during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. Minecraft has received critical acclaim, winning several awards and being cited by some as one of the greatest video games ever created social media, parodies, adaptations, merchandise, and the annual Minecon conventions played prominent roles in popularizing the game. The game's large community also offers a wide variety of user-generated content, such as modifications, servers, skins, texture packs, and custom maps, which add new game mechanics and possibilities. Game modes include a survival mode (in which players must acquire resources to build in the world and maintain health), creative mode (in which players have unlimited resources and the ability to fly), spectator mode (in which players can fly, go through blocks, and enter the bodies of other players and entities), adventure mode (in which players have to survive without being able to build and place blocks) and hardcore mode (in which the difficulty is set to Hard and dying causes the player to lose their ability to play on that world). Depending on their chosen game mode, players can fight hostile mobs, as well as cooperate with or compete against other players in the same world. Players can discover and extract raw materials, craft tools and items, and build structures, earthworks, and machines. It’s also worth noting that Mojang is currently working on adding cross-platforming to Java, so in a few months, Java may be the definite go-to. However, Java is best for Minecraft mods, free texture packs, and skins. Bedrock or Windows is the best choice for cross-platform play, it supports using a game controller, and you also have access to the Minecraft Marketplace that lets you buy game textures, skins, or custom maps. If you’re unsure which edition you want, it’s important to note the following. Mojang is currently working on adding cross-platforming to Java, so this may be the definite go-to in a few months. You can install either one by clicking on the version you want and hitting the big green ‘install’ button in the bottom centre. In the Minecraft Launcher, there will be both “ Minecraft: Java Edition” and Minecraft for Windows in the left-hand sidebar. However, there is a difference in which version you install unless you want to install both. Unlike the old days, Minecraft Java edition and Bedrock (now known as Windows) edition are a package deal meaning you can’t mess up and accidentally purchase the wrong version. Now you have successfully downloaded the Minecraft Launcher and registered your Microsoft account, all that’s left is to download the version of Minecraft that you want. All you really need to navigate in most all regions in this area that we travel is a compass, a topo map, and ability to interpret the many constant navigational clues you see around you.įor land navigation, you don't need that much accuracy. Most navigation should be done by pre-planning and terrain association anyway, with assistance from a compass. There's a neat trick for doing that, which is very easy but may not be obvious at first. Even a cheap (almost free) short metric scale ruler can be used on any random scale map, with just as much accuracy as the specialized square plotter/protractor. The scale on the compass baseplate will do. There are other very accurate methods to plot or measure coordinates without the specialized square plotter. I'm trying to lean the course away from having to purchase and bring that separate piece of specialized plotter equipment with you in the field. But use as a simple protractor alone (not as a coordinate plotter) does not depend on map scale.īut a good baseplate compass is certainly an accurate protractor, and it also "remembers" the azimuth it is set to. When we print small maps for desktop training, we have to adjust the printer scale by as much as 4% up or down depending on which office printer we use for them to match scale with the square plotter. As nartreb says, if you print your own map, you have to ensure it is printed at a standard scale set for the plotter you have if you want to use the coordinate measurement function. You can get them in different versions, depending on the standard scale of the map you have. The square plotter is used for reading and plotting UTM coordinates as well as a protractor. The course was originally developed before I got there by army veterans, so the army navigation field manual and using the square plotting protractor play a big part in the lessons and exercises. I co-instruct a 2-day Land Navigation course for Homeland Security, mostly to law enforcement and SAR type students. (I've been hiking in NH for a couple of decades, still haven't finished the Grid. That's not a terribly useful technique in New England, where if you've got good lines of sight, you probably already know where you are. In Alaska, I have used my compass as a protractor for sighting angles to distant peaks to triangulate my location on a large map. For trail distances, I'll usually mark my map in advance so I don't need to measure in mid-hike. If I want a more precise distance I'll use the ruler on my compass, but I can't remember the last time I bothered. I'm not usually navigating with great precision if I want to measure distances on my map, I usually compare my thumbnail or some such to the map scale, then step that over my route. It's only marginally useful to me, as I'm rarely travelling in a straight line anyway. Most backpackers' compasses have a ruler or two built into the side(s). Adjust your printer so that the scale on your printouts (for a given zoom level in Caltopo) matches one of the scales pre-printed on your compass/protractor. The size of your printouts is mostly up to your printer. Wasn't sure if there was some way of you could set a ratio so they could be utilized in some way on CalTopo maps.Īny feedback on the topic would be appreciated. Is there a setting on CalTopo that you can make the map render to a specific resolution so that it corresponds to one of the grids on the protractor? Obviously you can zoom in and out on CalTopo to print the exact area you want so I suspect this makes a product like this useless. I do most of my bearing markings, etc on CalTopo maps. I guess my big question with their use is that they are preprinted in various scales. Does anybody here use these products? They make it sound like a common item in the military, special forces, etc so I assume they have some value as a navigational tool (or they have successfully hooked me with their marketing hype ). I guess they are small clear plastic cards with measuring lines, etc to make plotting bearings, measuring distance and so forth easier and more accurate. While looking for another compass recently I stumbled upon a product called a grid protractor. Finding their voiceĪs a writer, you should use your voice to express your feelings, develop your characters, and express your ideas clearly and concisely. Students should consider where and when their memories or events occurred, create a precise sequence of events, including important details, and keep the narrative focused on the small moment. You can create an anchor chart that lists the aspects of a good story. Once you have reestablished these elements, you can start to introduce more specific details that will support a personal narrative The narrative structureĪuthors have to keep their narratives focused by not introducing too many characters or too many places the characters visit. If a problem is not solvable, it will not make a decent story. A tangle between characters, a choice to be made, or a predicament to be overcome. Instead, it may be about an account of the student trying to convince their parents to get them a new bicycle or banding together with friends to outwit a bully. A problem and a solutionĪ personal narrative, like any story, doesn’t necessarily have to be a harrowing tale about stopping an evil genius from taking over the world or solving a crime. Besides shaping the plot, characters push the story forward. Characters also serve as readers’ eyes, filtering the story’s events through their perspective. Developing well-rounded charactersĮven though it is a personal narrative, the reader won’t necessarily know the author or their backstory. The setting establishes the story’s tone, mood, and characterization. It may be set at any time or place as long as it is clearly defined. The setting is more than just a backdrop it plays an integral part in the story. The setting of a story isn’t just about location it also includes time period, weather, and mood. A plot functions as a roadmap for your narrative, showing readers where it is headed and what surprises lie ahead.
